The 1982 World's Fair
On May 1st, 1982, Knoxville welcomed the world to a newly-designed park located next to downtown and the campus of the University of Tennessee. The park was filled with dozens of brightly-colored, post-modern structures housing the culture, food, and innovations of various countries around the earth. The event, which would run for six straight months - until October 31st - was The World's Fair, and it helped to prove that Knoxville was more than just a 'scruffy little city'.
Now, 40 years later, the ETCDC is holding our annual gathering at two of the most iconic structures from the Fair - and the only two still remaining - the Tennessee Amphitheater and the Sunsphere.
While the Park as a whole and the surrounding areas have gone through major changes in the past four decades (for example, the Sunsphere is painted green now, instead of blue), the same spirit of fun and innovation that marked the Fair persists.
We are excited to honor this event and the Park that was created from it with an event of our own. We look forward to having our annual fundraiser at this iconic Knoxville location and celebrate it's 40th year of existence!
As well, we have partnered with Visit Knoxville this year to help take care of the iconic Sunsphere! Once we reach the threshold of $140,000, the next $40,000 we raise we are donating to the Sunsphere Restoration Fund! This is just one more way we are happy to help out the community we love!
