The Speedwell Academy was constructed in 1827 to replace a previous log school building.

In 1988, ETCDC provided stabilization and preservation plans for the building.

Speedwell Academy was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Known as the Speedwell Academy this historic structure was constructed in 1827 to replace a previous log school building. Made of handmade bricks and hand hewn timbers, the building shows the skill the laborers used in the construction. Known as the Speedwell Academy this historic structure was constructed in 1827 to replace a previous log school building. Made of handmade bricks and hand hewn timbers, the building shows the skill the laborers used in the construction. Claiborne County Schools operated the facility until 1970 and after some debate on its future, a group came together to preserve it in 1988. The ETCDC provided stabilization and preservation plans to guide the work. Speedwell Academy was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.
